Without delving into the how they happen, accidents with abrasive wheels can have serious, long lasting consequences on end-users, professionals or DIYers. Like waiting in long security lines in airports to ensure traveler's safety "just in case," the abrasives end-users need to follow the basic safety recommendations prior to starting their work "just in case."
  • Always read the safety instructions
  • Examine the disc or wheel for possible damage
  • Ensure the guard is fitted
  • Clean your workstation 
  • Ensure the workpiece is secure
  • Use protective equipment (PPE)

The Issue of SDS in Europe

Abrasives products such as coated, non-woven, bonded and superabrasives are all ‘articles with no intended release’ according to the REACH Regulation (Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals).  These products are excluded from the obligation to register and notify substances in articles (REACH Regulation – Article 7) and to provide a ‘Safety Data Sheet’ (SDS) (REACH Regulation - Article 31).

Some abrasive products are exempted from this status including: polishes, pastes and grains, which are defined as mixtures/substances.
What Did FEPA Members Do About It?

Instead of an SDS, members of FEPA (Federation of European Producers of Abrasives) provide on a voluntary basis, ‘Voluntary Product Information’ (VPI).  A VPI contains all relevant information as would have appeared in an SDS.

What's Going on in Europe?
For the first time, Romania hosts the Council of the Presidency of the EU as of 1 January 2019, taking it over from Austria. The presidency of the Council rotates among the EU member states every 6 months.
During this 6-month period, the presidency chairs meetings at every level in the Council, helping to ensure the continuity of the EU's work in the Council. The Presidency’s programme of work is shared by three Member States (the ‘Presidency trio’) over an 18-month period. The current trio is Romania, Finland and Croatia.
